(A NEW PERSPECTIVE)
It has been said that the most powerful aphrodisiac known to man is his mind. That the
brain is the biggest sex organ in the body is hardly unfamiliar to us. What a man can

Virtually all aphrodisiacs are naturally derived, and have their foundations in
homeopathic and natural healing. Golden Age Magazine, cites a study in which a drug
called Afrodex® was shown to be a potent aphrodisiac. The actual drug is derived from the
bark of an evergreen tree native to Cameroon. It was traditionally used by shamans and
healers as an anesthetic and a potent aphrodisiac. The research describes a double blind
test in which twenty-one men were given a placebo for four weeks that had no Afrodex in
it. They were then given the real Afrodex for four weeks. Another group of men were
administered the same program but in reverse.
“Before the study commenced the patients reported an average of three erections and
three orgasms a week, then after four weeks of being on the placebo, they reported back to
having eleven erections and eight orgasms weekly – this suggests the power of the
mind can play a role. However, when these same patients were placed on the true Afrodex,
they reported an average of forty-nine erections and twenty-three orgasms weekly.”
There are many medical personnel and research scientists of the opinion that aphrodisiacs
do indeed take an active role in the improvement of men’s sex lives. Through
revitalization of the mind, body, and soul, man can improve sexual performance and
virility with any number of methods.
Let us now address the type of aphrodisiac that has been marketed as making men more
virile through improving circulation. This is, in fact, the basis of the prescription drug
Viagra. Viagra is sildenafil, a vasodilator. A vasodilator is any drug that serves to
improve the circulation of blood by enlarging blood vessels. Since the penis is
essentially a large mass of blood vessels, the vasodilator dramatically improves the
erection. Specifically, sildenafil blocks the effects of an enzyme that is responsible for
tension in blood vessels, some of the body’s smooth muscle. NBC’s Dateline
script from 6 April 1998 states:
“By blocking the chemical that breaks down cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP),
Viagra helps to relax smooth muscle cells, thus increasing blood flow to the penis and
making it much easier for a man to get and maintain an erection.”
Regardless of how vasodilators work or what enzyme they block, they all improve
circulation by enlarging the blood carrying capacity of arteries, veins, and capillaries.
There are a remarkable number of vasodilators found in nature as well. Yohimbe, an herb
derived from the inner bark of the yohimbe tree that grows in Africa, has long been
reported to stimulate sexual desire and performance. The active component of this bark is
yohimbine, which is an alkaloid monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor that blocks adrenergic
receptors. As a result of this MAO inhibition, the blood vessels dilate and blood pressure
lowers. The dilation of the blood vessels is the generally accepted explanation as to the
effects of the bark. Because of potentially negative side effects such as anxiety, heart
rate increase, dizziness, headache, and skin flushing, the taking of yohimbine
extract should be done with caution. These side effects may or not apply to you if you do
decide to take a yohimbine extract, however, be aware of the potential physiological
effects of the bark.
Another potency herb or natural aphrodisiac is Potency wood or Muira puama. This shrub is
native to Brazil and has been used as a powerful aphrodisiac and nerve-stimulant in South
American folk medicine. The exact chemical pathways of potency wood are unknown, however,
it is thought that the wood enhances both psychological and physical aspects of sexual
function. Ginkgo biloba extract has also been touted as a sexuality enhancer simply for
the reason that it increases blood flow in all areas of the body. It has been marketed as
a memory improvement drug because it increases blood flow to the brain. Ginseng extract is
another natural potency herb. Preliminary research seems to indicate that it does promote
the growth of the testes, increases sperm formation, and increases testosterone levels.
These vasodilators, however, apply only to the specific problem of lack of blood flow.
There are many problems that we, as men, deal with as we age. Homeopathic medicine has
recognized this and has given us the means to deal with such things as prostate
enlargement. Saw palmetto, a small, palm-like plant, native to North America has been used
to treat problems with the male genitals, urinary tract, and reproductive system. The
active ingredients of saw palmetto are volatile oils, steroidal saponin, tannins, and
polysaccharides which all contribute to strengthening and building body tissues. For men,
saw palmetto counteracts the problems of an enlarged and weakened prostate gland. During
ejaculation and climax, the prostate contributes an alkaloid compound that adds to the
virility of the sperm. Benign prostatic hypertrophy, the name for the condition affecting
the prostate, is caused by testosterone being converted to dihydrotestosterone (Herbal
Information Center). This conversion is thought to cause prostate cells to multiply,
resulting in an enlarged prostate. Because saw palmetto helps with BPH and male virility,
it has been regarded as a potent natural aphrodisiac.
