Muira puama, marapuama or liriosma
is a bush occurring in the northern and northeastern parts of Brazil. The white flowers
have a jasmine-like pungent and aromatic smell. It is also known under the name potency
wood or under its latin name Ptychopetalum uncinatum (also known as P. olacoides)
The active constituents of Muira Puama are contained in the bark from which a concentrated
water extract or a herbal tea can be prepared. The herbal tea is slightly bitter but can,
of course, be sweetened to make it more palatable. A daily dose of muira puama would
correspond to the order of magnitude of one gram of bark.
First noted of significance as early as 1930 by M. Penna in "Notes Sobre Plantas
Brasileires" (1930) includes treatment of disorders of the nervous system, impotency,
and gastrointestinal and circulatory astenia. D. Schwontkowski in "Herbs of the
Amazon" (1993) mentions the widespread use of Muira Puama not only for male sexual
system treatment but also for frigidity, menstrual cramps and premenstrual syndrome.
In a French study with patients experiencing erectile problems or complaints or lack of
sexual libido, subjects were treated with Muira Puama. Within two weeks of daily
treatment using Muira Puama, 62 % of those patients experiencing diminished sexual libido
claimed that the treatment had a beneficial effect in improved sexual desire and
intensity. Of the patients with erection circumstances, 51% felt that muira puama was
beneficial in creating longer, stronger and more powerful erections and improves in
overall sexual capacity.
Muira Puama has been used in Central and South America and in Europe for many centuries as a sexual aphrodisiac and passion intensity enhancement. Muira Puama is the second most commonly used natural herbal aphrodisiac for enhanced sexual performance and sensitivity. Although the effects on the human constitution of any natural or man made substance varies greatly from individual to individual; generally, Muira Puama has fewer negative side effects than Yohimbe.
